OUR HISTORY<\/h2>

From a 30% chance of survival to a miracle!<\/h3>

On July 6, 1991, Marie Robert was rushed to the Emergency Room at the Sacr\u00e9-C\u0153ur Hospital in Montreal. She was in a severe coma and had suffered multiple fractures following a car accident. Doctors gave her only a 30% chance of survival.<\/p>

Years have passed, and we are still here with Marie, looking toward the future. The Marie-Robert Foundation was born, led by Marie herself. The miracle happened!<\/p>

Research: the solution to the Brain Puzzle!<\/h3>

Founded in 1993, the Marie-Robert NeuroTrauma Foundation was then known as the Fondation Marie-Robert pour la recherche sur les traumatismes cr\u00e2niens<\/em>. Over the past 34 years, the Foundation has educated the general population, the media and the legal, sports and business community about this tragic reality experienced by a growing number of people, young and old. It grew slowly but surely and received help from loyal donors who have today become partners. The Foundation is focused on raising and granting the necessary funds to advance medical knowledge on head injuries.<\/p>

OUR CAUSE<\/h2>

Head injuries<\/h3>

For 20 years, the Marie-Robert NeuroTrauma Foundation has been working to fund research on head injuries to improve care in the acute phase following the injury (0\u201315 days), with the goal of saving lives and treating victims more effectively and quickly in order to avoid permanent damage.<\/p>

From a simple concussion to a deep coma, the future of those injured is decided in the first 15 days.<\/p>

Whether as a result of a bike or car accident, after a fall or as part of practicing a sport, over 13,000 Quebecers suffer a traumatic brain injury each year. Sadly, such injuries are the leading cause of death for the under-35 crowd and create many long-term debilitating sequelae in children and adults.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Awarded to DR SEYEDADEL MORAVVEJI<\/strong>, postdoctoral researcher, as part of the project: Modeling Traumatic Brain Injuries Using The Virtual Brain: Toward Better Understanding and Personalized Treatment. This project will explore the neurobiological mechanisms underlying traumatic brain injuries (TBI \u2013 Traumatic Brain Injury) using innovative brain modeling tools. TBI is a major cause of death and disability worldwide, with complex consequences for patients, ranging from cognitive and motor deficits to neuropsychiatric disorders. Despite scientific advances, there is limited understanding of dynamic changes in the post-traumatic brain, which hinders the development of targeted therapeutic approaches. Thanks to this research grant, Dr. Moravveji will continue his research and further explore the neurobiological mechanisms underlying traumatic brain injuries. The expected results will promote a better understanding of brain dynamics in disrupted conditions and open the way to treatments tailored to the specific needs of patients with traumatic brain injury.<\/p>\n

Research topic:<\/strong> Validation study using structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging. This research will use the Advanced Nystagmus System (ANS), an eye headset, newly developed, as an objective diagnostic tool for traumatic brain injuries and concussions.<\/p>\n

This system will make it possible to analyze the coordination of the eyes and the head and will be tested on concussed patients in order to discover new markers to locate damaged neural centers and to track the progression of healing of injuries.<\/p>\n

The NTMR Foundation partners with the FRQS and becomes the 5th<\/sup> partner of the Consortium for research funding with the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MSSSQ), the Steering Committee for Trauma Research, the Provincial Research Network in Rehabilitation (REPAR) and the S.A.A.Q.<\/p>\n

As part of this partnership, the NTMR Foundation will offer $150,000<\/strong> over the next 3 years, i.e., $50,000 per year, for a research project that will focus on best clinical practices during the first 15 days following a traumatic brain injury, in order to avoid or reduce permanent sequelae and improve quality of life, thus promoting superior social reintegration.<\/p>\n

Research topic:<\/strong> The role of uric acid (alarmins) in inflammation leading to organ failure after multiple trauma with brain trauma. The objective is to study the role of alarmins, such as uric acid, and their involvement in triggering inflammation that leads to organ failure and brain inflammation.<\/p>\n

This Research grant was given to Dr Louis De Beaumont of the H\u00f4pital du Sacr\u00e9-C\u0153ur de Montr\u00e9al<\/strong> for the implementation of the project: \u201cStimulate in the acute phase to reduce impairments of the concussed brain.\u201d<\/p>\n

This project focused on two components, namely:
a) <\/strong>Adapt an intervention method whose effects are lasting, in order to reduce sequelae and promote the recovery of motor functions in young concussed athletes;
b) <\/strong>Evaluate the predictive value of structural and metabolic impairments of the motor system in the acute phase \u2013 72 hours post-concussion.<\/p>\n

Awarding of a $20,000 Research grant<\/h4>\n

Granted from the Marie-Robert Foundation Fund at Laval University for the implementation of the TRACS Project<\/strong>, focusing \u201con the effect of tranexamic acid as a medical treatment for chronic subdural hematomas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is a very frequent complication of traumatic brain injury, particularly in the elderly, where it is the most frequent reason for consultation in cranial neurosurgery.<\/p>\n

Granted by the Fund of the Marie-Robert Foundation at the University of Montreal, for the implementation at CHU Sainte-Justine of the Project aiming to \u201cdevelop an automated system for diagnosing the brain state of people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury, in order to analyze data received from different monitoring systems and provide continuous recommendations to optimize treatments based on the patient\u2019s condition.\u201d<\/p>\n

This project will be carried out with the close collaboration of a multidisciplinary team from CHU Sainte-Justine and the H\u00f4pital du Sacr\u00e9-C\u0153ur de Montr\u00e9al, and \u201cwill allow an improvement in the care provided, both in children and in adults.\u201d<\/p>\n

Me Claudia Di Iorio, LL.B.\/B.C.L., Lawyer<\/h3>\n\"Claudia-Di-Irio\"<\/a>In 2010, at the age of 16, Claudia<\/strong> was the victim of a tragic car accident<\/strong>, during which she suffered a so-called \u201csevere\u201d traumatic brain injury<\/strong> that left her in a coma for a month<\/strong>. Despite this, she managed to take back control of her life following her rehabilitation.\n\nIn 2011, motivated by the desire to ensure that her story would not happen to others, she took part in the documentary \u201cD\u00e9rapages.\u201d\n\nStarting in 2012, Claudia became the spokesperson for \u201cCool Taxi\u201d<\/strong>, a designated-driver coupon project initiated by her father and her two friends, who were also involved in the same car accident.\n\nDespite the misfortune of having suffered such trauma, she also realizes how fortunate she was to recover with only minor aftereffects \u2014 contrary to the doctors\u2019 predictions while she was still in critical condition.\n\nSince not everyone is given that same chance, she wishes to help those whose lives have been shaken, who fight every day to survive and learn to live with the serious aftereffects that a traumatic brain injury can leave behind. She wants to remind everyone that no one is immune and that, unfortunately, it doesn\u2019t only happen to others.\n\nToday, Claudia is proud to be associated with the Marie-Robert NeuroTrauma Foundation as its Spokesperson, to enable specialists to continue to \u201cResearch to Heal Better\u201d<\/strong> both young and old who are so gravely injured.\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
