Head trauma
Research is the only solution to this puzzle!
The brain controls everything. The brain is the person.
And yet, although the brain is a vital organ, so much is still not known about how it works. Some progress is always being made, but we still don’t know how to stem the cascade of biochemical reactions that too frequently follow an impact to the head.
Large-scale research and media projects will soon be launched, focusing attention on learning more about the “puzzle” of what happens to the brain after a head trauma. With your support, doctors, nurses and researchers will soon discover improved collaborative care practices for patients following craniocerebral trauma.
Accidents, as you know, just don’t happen to other people.
In July 1991, there was an accident on a dimly lit country road. More precisely, as we drove through a village, the car in which I was travelling collided violently with the wall of a general store… The darkness had prevented us from properly following the curve in the road. I was given a 30% chance of survival.
The impact I suffered left me in a deep coma for about ten days. Once out of this prolonged slumber, I had post-traumatic amnesia, causing me to not recognize my very dear mother, whom I politely greeted as “Madame”. I also didn’t recognize the other members of my family, who all seemed like utter strangers to me. You can imagine their reaction!
As the days passed, my memory returned slowly, but steadily, and the prodigious care I received at Montréal’s Sacré-Cœur Hospital made my will to live even stronger. A lawyer by trade, I have been working relentlessly since then on furthering the advancement of science. On May 25, 1993, I officially launched the Foundation with the full support of my family, my professional colleagues, and the doctors that surrounded me. Also attending that inauguration were people like you who believed in our mission.
Ever since, further research in this field has been stimulated, projects have received funding, and university research funds have been created at the Université de Montréal and the Université Laval in Québec City. The Foundation has prioritized research on the first few days following head trauma in order to prevent the mechanisms of deterioration that occur immediately in almost all cases.
Please take advantage of this opportunity to make a contribution to support scientific efforts that will increase the well being of everyone… young and old.
Thank you for helping to keep the brain – the core of everything we are – at the core of our mission!
